Garry Prose

Garry Ray Prose, 83, of Hilo, died June 20, 2022 at Legacy Hilo Rehabilitation &Nursing Center. Born June 19, 1939, in Scott City, Kansas, he was the proprietor of the former “Mail It” business in Hilo, U.S. Army veteran and truck racing enthusiast.

No services.

He is survived by wife, Marcia Prose of Hilo; and sons, Travis (Tiffany) Prose of Hilo and Clay (Karen) Prose of Minot, North Dakota.

Johanna Kaupu

Johanna Kwai Chun Akaka Hiliolani Kaupu, 50, died June 17, 2022, in Keaukaha. Born in Hilo, she was employed by the state Department of Education as an English 10, Language Arts Teacher at Waiakea High School and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Services are pending.

She is survived by daughter, Tiara Martino of Salt Lake City, Utah; son, Salvatore Martino of Hilo; father, Raphael (Sandy Cox) Kaupu Sr. of Keaukaha; mother, Johnnette (Eric) Higuchi of Hilo; brothers, Raphael (Meilani) Kaupu Jr. of Keaau and Kyle Higuchi of San Diego; and numerous uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces and cousins.

Vivianne Maeda

Vivianne “Viv” Capco Maeda, 45, of Keaau, died June 14, 2022 at Hilo Medical Center. Born Feb. 26, 1977, in Manila, Philippines; she was a registered nurse at Hilo Medical Center and a Army National Guard veteran.

Friends may call at 9:30 a.m. July 7 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo for Mass. Urn burial to follow Homelani Memorial Park at 11:30 a.m. (Ilima Section).

She is survived by children, Jason Maeda, Justin Maeda and Samantha Maeda of Hilo; former spouse, Paul Maeda of Hilo; mother, Rosario Capco of Pahoa; sisters, Gynna Loper of Boise, Idaho, Victoria (Jess) Tan of Manila, Philippines, Maria Velia (Edward) Ganal of Surrey, Canada and Vilma (Oliver) Capco-Parenas of Hilo; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

James Leek

James Leon Leek, 79, of Kailua-Kona, died April 11, 2022 at Kona Community Hospital. Born July 14, 1942, in Sacramento, he was a mortgage lender for Wells Fargo Bank and Bank of America and a U.S. Navy veteran.

Friends may call at noon July 14 at West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery for a memorial service. Casual attire.

He is survived by wife, Sandra Leek of Kailua-Kona; daughter, Heather Rosetti of San Mateo, California; step-daughter, Sylvia (Roger) Ross of Kealakekua; son, Kenneth Leek of Santa Rosa, California; and two granddaughters.

Elmer Pasta

Elmer Pasta, 80, of Hawaiian Paradise Park, died June 23, 2022, at his residence. Born in Lorain, Ohio, he was a retired writer and merchandiser.

No services to be held.

He is survived by spouse, Christine Pasta of Hawaiian Paradise Park; brothers, Dave Pasta of Houston, and Clifford Pasta of Washington state; stepson, Matthew Antone of Seattle; stepdaughter, Jocelin (Paul) Tara-Antone of Hilo; three nieces; and numerous grandchildren.

George Sakamoto

George Hideo Sakamoto, 91, died May 13, 2022. Born March 14, 1931 in Hilo, he was a self-employed Certified Public Accountant, U.S. Air Force veteran, and was a member of Hawaii Association of Public Accountants, Waiakea Lions, and Lower Kawailani Kumiai.

Private services held. The family requests koden (monetary offerings) be omitted.

He is survived by sons, Rodney Sakamoto of Hilo, and David (Gerry) Sakamoto of Honolulu; daughter, Laura (Kevin) Burke of California; sister-in-law, Thelma Sakamoto of Honolulu; caregivers, Pancho and Jayvie Sumoba, Wallace Honma; one grandchild; six step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Alpidio Castillo

Alpidio Bolusan Castillo, 87, of Milolii Village, died June 5, 2022 at Kona Community Hospital. Born May 11, 1935, in Lihue, Kauai, he was a pipe fitter for Alakai Plumbing, a member of ILWU and U.S. Army veteran.

Friends may call at 4 p.m. July 10 for an all-night vigil at his residence at 89-1707 Milolii Government Rd. in Milolii Village. Friends may also call at 10 a.m. July 13 for a scattering of ashes outside of Milolii Park with military honors. Celebration of life fellowship and music at the family’s residence will follow. Casual attire.

He is survived by wife, Shirley Casuga of Milolii Village; daughters, Yvette (Dowell) Jordan of Carson, California, Christina (Richard) Casuga of Tacoma, Washington, and Laurie (Rashad) Casuga-Matthews of Kailua-Kona; son, Alton (Wendy) Yoshikawa of Honolulu; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
